Project Homeless Connect is a national model that originated in San Francisco under Mayor Gavin Newsom's leadership in October 2004. The Project needed a web presence in order to convey information about the project so people could get involved.
A volunteer management system needed to be created and maintained in a addition to an email marketing campaign started in order to generate a volunteer base.
The result increased a volunteer base from 300 potential volunteers to 13,000. Bimonthly, 1,200 volunteers engage 1,500 homeless. In addition, Project Homeless Connect is now implemented in 32 cities across the United States.
Project Homeless Connect also inspired San Francisco Connect a newly formed nonprofit, engaging citizens to volunteer their talent and time for San Francisco
